HEC Sustainability Challenge
For a third year, HEC Montréal will host the HEC Sustainability Challenge, a case competition on sustainability. The case competition takes place on March 17, 2012 as part of the Montréal Sustainability Weekend (March 16-18) which is co-organized with Concordia University and McGill University. This year’s case will be related to energy and international issues. Participants include MBA students from business schools across North America (Canadian and American). http://www.businessbeyondtomorrow.com/case-competition/
For this year’s edition of the HEC Sustainability Challenge, we would like to invite you to
- be part of the HEC team which will be competing,
- refer potential sponsors; and
- volunteer the day of the event.
1) HEC TEAM SELECTION
HEC Montréal will be selecting a 4-person team for the HEC Sustainability Challenge. Try-outs will be held during the week of February 6th (after class) and will take 10-15 minutes per applicant. Professor Paul Lapensée will coach the selected team. As this is the last case competition of the season, we urge you not to miss the opportunity to represent your school in this important event. If you are interested in trying out, please send an e-mail to Carolina Vaca-Mateus (carolina•vaca-mateus©hec•ca) by Sunday February 5th at noon. Details on the exact time of try-outs and try-out preparation will be provided by e-mail after registration.
In order to qualify, you must be:
- Available from March 16th to 18th for the case competition
- Available to practice with Professor Lapensée for 3 to 4 separate sessions between February 13th to March 16th (no practice during spring break).
2) SPONSORSHIP REFERRALS
The HEC Sustainability Challenge represents an excellent opportunity for organizations to raise their visibility among skilled and ambitious MBA students from across Canada and the United States. We are actively looking for corporate sponsors to help us make this event the best it can be. If you have a contact at an organization that might be interested in sponsoring the event, please send an email to Domenic Decicco (domenic•decicco©hec•ca) .
3) VOLUNTEER
A small army of about 30 volunteers made this event possible last year. Be part of the team that hosts our guests, and makes this an intense, fun and unforgettable event for all involved! More communications on volunteer recruitment will be sent on this in the coming weeks. In the meantime, if you are interested in helping out, please contact Robyn Collette (robyn•collette©hec•ca) .

Debate FOR / AGAINST increasing tuition fees
The campaign for / against the strike has already begun even though the debate on increasing tuition fees seems to escape from students. The debate for / against the increase in tuition between the University of Montreal students aims to enable students to take back the arguments and make visible a debate that is too often happening in a closed circuit (within student associations or in media where people take ownership of the students point of the views).
Students from different student associations would organize it. The sociology students association of University of Montreal felt that they should work on a partnership with the HEC Montreal graduate students associations to give the image of an unbiased debate and get the support from a maximum of other student associations. However, the idea is not to organize a debate between HEC Montreal that would support a position vs. social studies departments that would support the other. The debate is for / against, no matters the student discipline of study.
Media (eg, CISM student radio and the Montreal press) would be invited for the occasion in addition to the large invitation to students and professors from the University of Montreal. The activity would take place in an amphitheater at the University of Montreal. Schedule: in February 2012.
If you would be interested to participate in this activity, please send a note to Jean-Nicolas Denis (president©hecaemba•org) before the end of January.
Reminder : Minimum of 2.3 GPA
Please keep in mind that HEC Montréal demands a minimum of 2.3 GPA to continue in the MBA program. A student is considered in probation if his/her GPA is between 2.3 and 2.7 and has one probation period to bring it up.
For more information refer to page 16 of the Regulations Applicable to Students at HEC Montréal -MBA by clicking here.
