POP (Post Office Protocol) was the first of the two methods of retrieval to be created. This protocol fetches messages from your outgoing mail server and storing them on your computer (or another web-based account). By default, POP deletes the message from the original mail server (mailstore.hec.ca) when downloading it. You can optionally have fetched messages not be deleted from the server.

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is a method that accesses information from the original mail server on a need-to-know basis. That is, it will show a list of the mail folder structure and messages. It only downloads the contents of a message if it is opened by the user. Nothing is deleted from the server, and the messages are synchronized between the server and the client application(s) (e.g. Outlook, mobile phone).

In short, POP downloads messages upon receipt while IMAP synchronizes your mail client with the server.

You may import your messages using POP or IMAP:

  • POP
    • POP Server: mailstore.hec.ca
    • Port: 995
    • Secure Connection (SSL)
  • IMAP
    • IMAP Server: mailstore.hec.ca
    • Port: 143
    • Does not use Secure Password Authentication (SPA).

You can send emails through the HEC.ca outgoing server via the following settings:

  • SMTP Server: smtp.hec.ca
  • Port: 465
  • Secured Connection (SSL)
  • Requires authentication (student number & password)
